X Avant XIII: The Halluci Nation Night 2
Maria Chávez + Geronimo Inutiq + respectfulchild
Night two of X Avant features its most introspective and experimental sounds. Headlining is one of the world’s most creative turntablists, Maria Chávez. It’s been eight years since Toronto experienced her rigorous, playful and inspiring explorations in vinyl.
Born in Lima, Peru, Chávez is an abstract turntablist, sound artist, and DJ. Accidents, coincidence, and failures are themes that unite her sound sculptures, installations, and other works with her solo turntable performance practice. She wrote her first book on her unique approach to abstract turntablism in 2012 titled OF TECHNIQUE: Chance Procedures on Turntable, a book of essays and illustrations that guide the novice turntablist to explore the world of needles and vinyl through the lens of deterioration, destruction, and the unexpected.
Geronimo Inutiq, featured on the cover of Musicworks Magazine in 2017, is an accomplished artist specializing in electronic music production, DJing, as well as digital image and video production. Having been exposed to strong traditional Inuit cultural elements in his youth, as well as the worlds of modern art and broadcast through close members of his kin, Inutiq has been able to weave those multiple reference points into his artistic practice in innovative ways.
respectfulchild (敬兒) is the solo instrumental project of Gan from Saskatoon on Treaty 6 Territory. They build experimental ambient soundscapes through slow progressions of meticulous improvisation from just their violin. With a sound that has been likened to artists such as Brian Eno, Nils Frahm, and Owen Pallett, the lone presence of respectfulchild is able to bring quiet to even the noisiest of rooms.
