Scentimental

Multimedia , Performance in What Is: heart(break) Series

Blending scent, sound, and ritual into a holding loving memory.

For our third night of What Is: heart(break), we indulge the senses for tender moments when you actively miss someone.

In recapturing what feels lost, artist billie raphael invokes heirlooms as a vessel for grief in a ritual-performance inspired by dust, rituals, and the hushed residual undertones present in heirlooms. And in homage to these memories, aromatic curator Sandro Petrillo will infuse the conservatory with hand-rolled incense recalling old, familiar scents to be relived and cherished anew, reconstructing times and places just out of reach.

Mirroring aromatic diffusions, beloved artist Mas Aya + Friends will perform structured yet open free improvisations drawing from jazz, various global folk traditions, Cuban Santeria, Colombian Cumbia, and electronic music, creating an ecstatic sonic experience of nostalgia in its full wistfulness that nevertheless pushes forward.

Attendees are encouraged to take part in the ceremony facilitated by billie raphael by wearing or bringing an heirloom from someone they love that often doesn’t get to see the light of day.

Curated by Allan Gardens, a plant sniffing station will be available for you to experience nature at its olfactory finest, and to take home!
