This season our History Series continues with two linked events which explore the documentation of creative music in Toronto. Creative music, as we use it in our slogan “Toronto’s Centre For Creative Music”, has a historical basis in the mid-60s with Chicago’s Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. Their charter states that creative music encompasses “serious, original music” but is not limited to jazz-based expression. Throughout this series, and in our programming in general, we strive to explore every potential aspect of this inclusive term.
Our first edition of this series in 2018 is the History of Creative Music on Campus Radio. Non-mainstream music and radio art got a big boost from the emergence of FM radio at the end of the 60s. Combined with the advent of late night programming, radio opened up countless hours of experimental programming possibilities for stations large and small. Campus radio at CJRT, CKLN and the Scope (Ryerson), CIUT (U of Toronto) and CHRY (York) were especially important in fostering community and paying royalties to up and coming musicians creating jazz, new music and completely unclassifiable sounds.
This panel discussion is hosted at CIUT studios by Artistic Director David Dacks, himself a 25-year veteran of CIUT, and features panelists Ron Gaskin, Sarah Peebles, Nilan Perera, Claudia McKoy and Luca Capone. Expect a wide-ranging conversation about sounds, aesthetics, personalities and anecdotes from decades gone by right up to the present day. This session will be recorded for future broadcast on CIUT.
