The Music Gallery has been at the centre of experimental music and community-building in Toronto for nearly 50 years. We program a variety of concerts, festivals, workshops, and residencies each season, and welcome thousands of participants. There are community members who have been with the Music Gallery from the beginning, and new audiences join every year.
As a front of house staff you would be a vital member of the Music Gallery event team, welcoming and orienting audiences as they arrive. Front of house helps to create a positive and safe environment during Music Gallery events, making it possible for folks to gather and share in each artistic experience.
During an event you would either manage the box office (which includes ticket sales, artist merchandise, and memberships) or the bar (serving snacks and drinks). All front of house staff receive training in order to alternate between these two roles.
As the ideal front of house candidate, you are a lover of diverse approaches to experimental music and its various communities. You value a flexible schedule and enjoy working with a diverse range of people.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise event facilities (primarily 918 Bathurst), may include opening and/or closing on occasion
- Support fellow Front of House staff team, and onboarding of new staff
- Set up and strike of event materials (temporary signage, tables, concessions, etc)
- General post-event tidying of venue following events
- Operating Point of Sale system (Square) including: Update ticketing, concession, and merchandise items; handling cash and card transactions; exporting sales reports.
- Box office operation: sign-in advance ticket buyers, sell tickets at the door
- Bar service: serve drinks and snacks to audience members, restock bar during events
- Post-event reconciliation of box office, merchandise, and concession sales
- Act as Anti-Harassment Officer (AHO) when required. Training will be provided.
- Co-presentation lead during select events: prepare cash floats, concession inventory, green room setup, and collecting guest list names
- Report to Music Gallery senior staff (Artistic Director, Executive Director)
Skills and qualities:
- Passionate and curious about creative, boundary-pushing music/art
- Strong customer service skills
- Friendly, courteous and conversational
- Comfortable with Google Sheets, Excel
- Experience with Point of Sale, Box Office systems (Square, Showclix, others)
- SmartServe certified
- Committed to ongoing learning regarding anti-racism, anti-oppression, safer spaces, accessibility
Accessibility statement:
- The Music Gallery’s primary venue, 918 Bathurst, is not fully accessible due to stairs (two half flights to enter the performance space, and one flight to access the washrooms).
- Front of house staff are required to lift heavy objects (cases of beer, the bar cooler, bags of ice etc) which can weigh up to 40 lbs. This heavy lifting is shared with coworkers.
