EMERGENTS IV: ROOM TONE

Workshop in Emergents Series

The Music Gallery presents
EMERGENTS IV: ROOM TONE – Workshop: Photogrammetry as Creative Archive
Thursday, May 13, 2021
7:00PM

EMERGENTS IV: ROOM TONE curated by Sara Constant, is a workshop and exhibit focusing on radical archival techniques and community building. Broken into parts, this exploration of 3D scanning and VR as tools for music presentation will feature a FREE online workshop for the public led by Lilian Leung, an artist development workshop for six early-career musicians led by Dan Tapper, followed by a public exhibit of VR spaces created by those six musicians to showcase their music online..

“Time without conventional concerts has made me think about how the Music Gallery can hold space for early-career musicians and their work. Photogrammetric scanning and webVR have both been used to create digital archives and artworks that centre community voices and values. If we look at those technologies, what can we as early-career artists build together to take hold of how our work is documented online—and to discover new forms that our music can take? For me, this project is about giving musicians those tools, and that space to imagine,” states curator Sara Constant.

The first event on May 13 from 7-9PM entitled Photogrammetry as Creative Archive, features an artist talk with Tkaronto/Toronto-based digital artist Lilian Leung. Lilian will discuss their work with photogrammetry, a form of 3D-scanning. Drawing on their recent project Future through Memory: Chinatown VR Storytelling, where they developed community-created, interactive documentation of Toronto’s Chinatowns, Lilian will speak about the potential of photogrammetry as a more widely accessible form of digital artmaking—and as a radical form of community archive. As well Lillian will address their own approach to creative photogrammetry, and the ethical, social, and artistic implications of 3D scanning. They will then share how to make a 3D scan using a computer and basic (phone) camera, provide a walkthrough of the photogrammetry software Agisoft Metashape, and hold a Q+A session for the public.
