The second online Emergents project of 2020/21 features string players with broad creative practices. Across three solo sets, Kris Kuldkepp, Émilie Girard Charest and Yaz Lancaster delve into new sonic exploration of classical string instruments—blending backgrounds in composition, improvisation, performance and interdisciplinary art.
Kris Kuldkepp is a Hamburg-based free improviser on double bass and live-electronics. She is currently completing her doctoral studies at the Hamburg University of Applied Science, where she researches gesture-driven spatial sound in free improvised music, and will play a solo double bass improvisation for the Music Gallery.
Montreal-based cellist/composer/improviser Émilie Girard-Charest performs as a soloist and ensemble member, and has had her own music played by ensembles such as Thin Edge New Music Collective and SuperMusique. For Emergents, Girard-Charest will play a cello set that bridges her own compositions and her solo improvising practice.
Interdisciplinary artist Yaz Lancaster’s work often focuses on practices aligned with relational aesthetics and the everyday, fragments and collage, and anti-oppression. Active as a creator and performer (violinist, steel pannist, and vocalist) in a variety of artistic settings, they have worked with groups like Apply Triangle and JACK Quartet. For the Music Gallery, Lancaster will perform a collection of short works and miniatures for solo violin/violin and electronics, composed by their friends and collaborators.
