Radio Music Gallery Call for Mixes

Playlists/mixes are a curatorial outlet; one that we wish to share with community members.

While it might seem like background music, we cherish the process of selecting and building a playlist/mix that can be pumped into performance spaces during doors and intermission at an event. A great playlist/mix can draw connections between artists, styles, and histories, and set the stage for deep listening and engaging with a performance.

We invite community members to submit existing or proposed playlists for inclusion during our upcoming X Avant Festival, Texture (October 15-19). Selected playlists will also be included on Radio Music Gallery through FSR.

Submission Requirements

1. Choose between one of these themes: 

• Synthesis- what does it mean for two separate objects to fuse together? What does it mean for things to grow, meld and form something new?
  
• Slow and steady– how does it sound to move with intention? To reach for the sky, to glide through the air, to slink across the ground? 
  
• Big and smol- How can opposites belong together? What does it mean to take up as much and as little space as possible? Can both exist in the same space?
  

2. Show us what you’re thinking, you can either:

a) Provide 10 minutes* of audio from a pre-existing mix, or a compilation of songs that represent the vibe of ONE of the prompts from above. Only submit tracks via YouTube, SoundCloud or Bandcamp. DO NOT submit songs via Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal or any other subscription based streaming services as we will not be able to playback your selection; OR

b) Submit a pre-recorded mix* of yours that matches this vibe. DO NOT make a new mix for these prompts.

*If you are providing something longer than 10 minutes, please provide a timestamp where we should begin listening.

3. Submit a 100 word / 600 character (max) blurb about your thoughts behind your submission. Feel free to get creative here in your explanation. Describing why music is amazing is incredibly hard! 

Next Steps

Scope:

• The Music Gallery will select 3 playlists to be used during our X Avant Festival.
• Limit of one submission per person.

Project Timeline:

• Deadline for submissions: September 13, 2024
• Results emailed: September 20, 2024
• Submission of mixes from selected creators: October 7, 2024
  • Detailed specifications for final mixes will be provided

Selected Mixes:

Once selected, the creator provides:

• Final mix of complete playlist, 59 minutes total (leaving space for FSR station IDs)
  • Playback at the venue would be loosely divided in two sections:
    • 30-40 minutes (door)
    • 20 minutes (intermission)
• Image: a profile picture, or another image to pair with the mix
• Short description: an updated statement about the mix to include with streaming audio.
• Artist and recording list:
  • Ideally with links to Bandcamp or other artist-centred platform in order to facilitate listener purchases of selected recordings.

Creator receives:

• $100 CAD
• 1-5 tickets to the Music Gallery event featuring their playlist (dependent on venue capacity)
