Toronto, Ontario – The Music Gallery is pleased to share that it has received a $2,500 USD project grant from the Grammy Museum to support research and implementation for its audio archive.

The Grammy Museum has multiple granting streams which includes support for archival and preservation programs. The grant will allow the Music Gallery to lay the groundwork to preserve a singular historical record of the development of experimental/contemporary music in Canada.

This project marks the first phase leading towards an operational plan for an ongoing archival practice at the Music Gallery, and a public-facing searchable archival tool.

Consultations with several partner organizations will be a central feature of this project. The Music Gallery will deepen its conversations with staff at the Clara Thomas Archives & Special Collections at York University which houses and preserves numerous audio recordings and ephemera from early Music Gallery history. Additionally, the Music Gallery will be in touch with Western Front in Vancouver which introduced a permanent archival role on its staff team in 2010.

Music Gallery Technical Director Paul Hodge will help to oversee this project. Hodge has been the lead audio technician on the vast majority of Music Gallery productions since 1976. He currently manages audio materials dating back to the 90s, and ongoing audio archiving.

From Paul Hodge: “While digitizing the Music Gallery audio archive, I have been re-experiencing many amazing musical moments from our rich history. I am excited for this opportunity to make these recordings available and to share this experience with a wider audience.”

The Music Gallery will share updates on the project with community members in the next year.
