Last season, the History Series presented a pair of related events focusing on local media narratives about and support of creative music in Toronto. February’s History Series concerned community radio (transcript coming soon). This session took place in April, prior to a concert celebrating the memory of Ken Aldcroft, whose many CD releases made him visible in Toronto’s print media. Artistic Director David Dacks, a longtime music journalist who wrote and edited for Exclaim, CBC, Eye Weekly among others, moderated this session about the challenges and joys of trying to describe abstract music in words, and what that means to creative musicians.
Panelists for this event were Mark Miller (author, Coda, Globe and Mail), Carl Wilson (Slate, Zoilus, Globe and Mail), Katie Jensen (Polaris Music Prize podcast, IMPSTR), Jennie Punter (Musicworks, Toronto Star) and Jerry Pratt (Exclaim, Metro Word).
