The Board of Directors of the Music Gallery, Toronto’s Centre For Creative Music, is pleased to announce the selection of Sanjeet Takhar as the organization’s Artistic Director. Sanjeet succeeds David Dacks, who recently moved into the role of Executive Director.
Sanjeet is a curator, producer, and writer based in Toronto. Having worked in Toronto’s DIY electronic music scene for nearly a decade, her work centers around creating spaces; approaching music through themes of inclusivity, uplifting communities, and creating connections. Focusing on the balance between artist and audience, Sanjeet believes in the power of embodied compassion, where music transcends space and time and acts as a truly political tool; a living, breathing act of revolution and storytelling.
Most recently, Sanjeet was Event Producer at Promise Inc, having shaped a long-term vision to diversify artists and audiences that saw a 50% increase in attendance over two years. During the past near decade she has built a solid reputation programming online and live events focusing on community and growth in the music and art scene. Additionally, Sanjeet has background in marketing and is a yoga teacher who teaches Anti-Oppression as part of her practice.
Sanjeet will be dedicated to embodying The Music Gallery’s vision of presenting innovative music which represents and embodies contemporary Toronto.
“Music to me is everything, it is all I’ve ever wanted to work in.” says Takhar. “I find deep joy in uplifting the art of those around me, I feel passionate about giving voices to the amazing talent of my peers. I feel this even more during the pandemic. Through all the devastation is a glimmer of newness. People are taking care of one another, they’re finding new ways to express themselves, daydreams of DIY are all around, and in the eyes of many, it’s a chance for us all to rebuild Toronto’s music and art scene. The Music Gallery is a cornerstone of this city, and this opportunity feels like a dream.”
During the artistic director search process, The Music Gallery prioritized continuity with the past while moving boldly into the future during and beyond the disruption to live music presentation caused by Covid 19. Sanjeet will lead the artistic leadership team that also includes existing curators Tad Michalak (Departures series) and Sara Constant (Emergents series).Dave Darby, President of the Board of Directors, said “We were fortunate to have had a vast and diverse response to our call for Artistic Director. Amongst many excellent candidates, Sanjeet immediately caught the attention of the Hiring Committee with her inclusive artistic vision, her energy and her values and she quickly emerged as the right person to build upon the Music Gallery’s legacy with an exciting new direction.”
“I am very much looking forward to working with Sanjeet” said David Dacks. “During the recruitment process, I was extremely impressed by her perspective on creating original, creative events whether live or virtual. Her community-focused perspective meshes brilliantly with our values. I am sure to learn a great deal from her outlook and methods, and pledge to support her vision with the experience I’ve gained at the Gallery over the past decade.”
Sanjeet’s appointment is effective January 4, 2021.
