Toronto, Ontario – David Dacks, Artistic Director of the Music Gallery, has announced that the 2019-20 will be his last season of programming, and will step down from his role no later than October 2020.
David started programming at the Music Gallery in September 2010 and has been Artistic Director since January 2012. His imaginatively programmed concert experiences and collaborations have broadened the scope of experimental music in Toronto and featured multiple world premieres leading to international recordings and tours. David has brought new audiences for innovative music to the Music Gallery thanks to his strong focus on equity both on stage and off. David looks forward to pursuing new adventures and is excited to assist in the transition to the next Artistic Director.
Prior to stepping down from his role, David will pass on his knowledge and experience through a new Music Gallery mentorship program, which will see him train and collaborate with two Artistic Associates during The Music Gallery’s 2019-20 season.
A formal search for the next Artistic Director will be announced in the coming months.
“David has fully embodied the artistic spirit of the Music Gallery during his tenure. His work has honored our creative history at the same time it has written an exciting new chapter. I’m grateful for how David’s programming has opened my ears personally, and I would like to extend much appreciation on behalf of the Board of Directors. We are sad to see David step away and are looking forward to his exciting last season with the Music Gallery”, said Dave Darby, Music Gallery President.
“It has been an honour to serve the Music Gallery as Artistic Director. This has been the most rewarding professional experience of my life so far. I have had more moments of musical joy and deep connection with artists than I could ever express. I am happy to pass the torch to someone new as the Music Gallery continues to solidify its home base at 918 Bathurst and strengthen its bonds with music lovers from all walks of life in Toronto.
