Emergents II finds itself in cahoots with the RCM New Music Ensemble (Dec 6) and New Music Concerts (Dec 8/9) in featuring the music of Korean composers. Our emerging protagonists are two exceptional Canadian performers who have systematically been tackling the hardest pieces in the new music repertoire, amassing considerable frequent flyer miles in the process. This show includes music by Brian Current, Pierre Boulez, NYC Can-Banger Derek Johnson and Koreans Unsuk Chin and Isang Yun.
Claudia Chan has been busy since winning first prize at the 33rd Eckhardt-Gramatté Competition for Contemporary Music, but this event marks her long-overdue Music Gallery debut. Véronique Mathieu, a prizewinner at the most recent E-Gré Competition, regularly performs on four different continents. Both players are remarkably focused on the music of our time.
Hailed by the Ottawa Citizen as the “Ambassador for New Music”, pianist Claudia Chan made her concert debut at the age of eleven. Since then, Claudia has performed solo and chamber recitals all over the world. Her concert at the Winnipeg Art Gallery was also recorded and broadcast by CBC Radio 2 on Concerts on Demand. She was also the subject of an episode of CBC’s podcast Next!, selected as one of 8 up-and-coming young musicians from Canada.
Canadian violinist Véronique Mathieu has performed as soloist and chamber musician in Canada, Europe, South Africa, South America, and the United States. Véronique is Artist in residence at the Festival International de Musica de Piracicaba, in Brazil, and regularly performs with the New York Chamber Soloists. She holds degrees from the Conservatoire de Musique de Québec, McGill University, and is a candidate for the Doctor of music degree in violin performance at Indiana University. Véronique wishes to thank the Canada Council for the Arts for its generous support through the loan of the 1715 Dominicus Montagnana violin.
